Struggling with some of the specific words used here? Here are some common words I use and a quick definition and link to relevant content.

  • Assistive technology (AT): products, equipment, and systems that enhance learning, working, and daily living for persons with disabilities. (https://www.atia.org/home/at-resources/what-is-at/)
  • Email Client: An email client, email reader or, more formally, message user agent (MUA) or mail user agent is a computer program used to access and manage a user’s email. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_client) This is usually broken down into desktop computer program (like Outlook), webmail (like gmail.com), or phone app (like iOS mail app). Each email client has it’s own different support for different attributes – which impact rendering and accessibility support.
  • Vector Markup Language (VML): Proprietary code used in Microsoft products that is largely obsolete, but still works in some versions of Outlook. (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/VML)
  • Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG): The WCAG documents explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities. (https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/#intro)
